Here's the pencil version of the cover. I chose to draw batman on his bat-cycle mainly because I can't remember ever seeing a cover with him on one. Plus I wanted to something a little different.
I'm still getting used to Batman himself, as he's still very much new to me. I know I want to establish 'my' look for him. But that usually comes after a couple of issues worth of drawing, where I'll find that certain something that will make him unique to me.
There are so many cool interpretations of Batman and I like so many of them. From Neal Adams and Aparo, to Mignola and Jim Lee, to Darwyn Cooke, Tim Sale and Mazzucchelli.
I think for me, finding the balance for who I think Batman is, is key. He wears his costume to scare. So I'll be depicting Batman with his cape lowered over his body like a bat, as he intends, using the cape for his frightening effect.
But also, Batman is a super hero, larger than life. So I'll also be showing his superior physique and agility, unobscurred by the cape.
One thing that I love is that Batman isn't running around at 11 AM. He's out at night. So he's usually cast in some sort of shadow. That's when I think he looks the best, and is the most representative of what he was originally created to be. But I love having so many choices to work with with him.
Anyways, that's what's on my mind this morning. I'd better get to work.
