BATMAN AND ROBIN 3 VARIANT COVER

I had a lot, a lot of fun doing this cover. I wanted to do something similar to my very first Batman cover, 670, but really didn't want to retread the idea. But this being a variant cover, I figured this is my only opportunity to do something similar but different enough to actually do. I mean how many covers are there that have Batman perched on some kind of gargoyle or rooftop? I'd say too many to count over the years. It's iconic and people want to see that, but as an artist, you try to bring something new to the common portrayal. I probably will shy away from gargoyle perchings for a good while now, especially since this one is out of my system.

Best

Tony

What are you doing with these variant covers and such!? It looks great, amazing even, but shouldnt you be getting to work on your next Batman run? Sure, it will be a while before we see it, to appreciate it, but we hate delays!

Looks great, Tony. Thanks for posting!

I like the new Batman storyline with Dick trying to make Batman his own - mistakes and all. I assume your run will continue that theme?

Hey Tony, if you could've worked with Geoff Johns on any of his Lanterns which color would you have liked to design some characters for?

What an amazing cover.Your work just keeps getting better and better.

I love the eagles but the best part has to be how yo draw Dick, Damian, Jason and Tim as so same but yet there is that facial feature and body feature that allows us to easily tell apart which is which. =)

Hey Tony, cover looks great. Nice to see Dick looking less built then Bruce was.

Question though, has the official design for Batman changed? I notice that in all your recent covers and in Phillip Tan's previews for his run on Batman and Robin the suit looks like a combination of the Adam Kubert design and the Quitely design with the Gauntlets looking like Kubert's but the best retaining the bat-logo from Frank's?

Is there an official word? I'm just curious because I have a lot of love for the Quitely gauntlets and the way they look.

Batman is a character that always seems to be drawn slightly different depending on the artist. I will try to stay close to what the design on BM and R though.

Yeah, and besides, I've got a few suits hanging in my wardrobe that I wear to work, and while they're similar they're not exactly the same! I don't think it matters to much if Bats wears a slightly different cowl one day to the next or that Damian decides to were his slightly spikier gauntlets one day or another! A bit of consistency for the sake of `graphic designs' cool and all (obviously character's need to be recognizable and cool looking!) but Super-hero costumes are the hero's own clothes; its not like they're in the army or something! (And even GLs, Blackhawks & Darkstars personalise their uniforms!) I think sometimes fans care too much about specifics of costume detail. I'm just glad I'm a Batman man and not a Flash fanatic (those guys are detail mad).

Also, re your profile pic, are you a tea or coffee (or something else) drinker, Tony? Curious fans want to know.

Tony S Daniel said...

I'm a big coffee drinker. I can't live without it! I use to be big into espressos and what not and I even have a very nice LaVazza machine here, but I have cut back to just regular (but strong) coffee.

Tony, I'm a big fan and I was wondering how someone would contact you for something like an interview. I can't seem to find an email online anywhere.

Thanks,

Oh you know I had to ask... is the new name on your blog the name of your upcoming run?

Tony S Daniel said...

Yes. Batman: Life After Death.

It has more than one meaning in this case.

Tony, I´ve to ask:

During The Resurrection of Ra´s Al ghul what was that small white bag with a chord, over the Sensei´s head while he beat up Batman?

Tony S Daniel said...

You might be referring to the cherry blossom that is falling slowly to the ground during the fight.

MrManiac said...

I missed that, Tony.

Damn! Grant had me right into apophenia too.

I´m looking at all the storyline looking for clues. I hate that man =D.
